41% of disabled Palestinian children suffer more than one disability, reveals UNICEF

UNICEF announced on Tuesday that 41 per cent of disabled Palestinian children suffer from more than one disability, Safa news agency has reported.

The statistic was revealed at a workshop in the Gaza Strip, where the UN organisation pointed out that this figure is distributed between the West Bank and the Gaza Strip at 31.7 per cent and 53.3 per cent respectively. Representatives from different ministries, including the ministry of education, took part in the programme.

A study announced by UNICEF recommended that the Palestinian government and the NGOs working in Palestine should adopt plans to bring about greater inclusion of disabled children within society.

Israel’s military offensive against the Palestinians in Gaza two years ago led to more than 2,260 people being killed; a further 11,000 were wounded. According to the General Union for Disability in Gaza, 40 per cent of the Palestinians wounded in the 2014 war have long-term disabilities.
