Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi spoke to his Russian counterpart on Wednesday to express his condolences over the assassination of Russia’s ambassador to Turkey in Ankara on Monday. Sisi added his country’s support for the Russian leadership and people in the face of terrorism.

“The terrorist attacks that have recently erupted in different places around the world emphasise, once again, the importance of concerted international efforts to fight terror,” Sisi told Vladimir Putin.

According to an official statement from Cairo, Putin thanked Sisi and stressed the strength of Egypt-Russia bilateral relations and the importance of enhancing links, including those connected to anti-terrorism.

At the same time, it was revealed that Moscow intends to resume flights to and from Cairo following the conclusion of security and technical assessments carried out since a Russian Airbus A321, operated by Metrojet, crashed over Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula in October last year. All 224 people on board were killed when the flight from the Egyptian resort of Sharm El-Sheikh to St. Petersburg came down. Terrorism is suspected. Sisi welcomed the Russian decision to resume flights.
