Tunisian foreign ministry says US supports Libya initiative

American has expressed its support for the Tunisian initiative and efforts to “pursue dialogue and consensus” among Libyan parties to resolve the crisis, the foreign ministry said yesterday.

In a statement released after a meeting between Minister of Foreign Affairs, Khamis Alaghinawa, and US President Donald Trump’s Special Envoy for International Negotiations, Jason Greenblatt, in Jordan on the sidelines of the Arab League summit.

The statement added that the US official stressed on the need for consultation between Tunisia and the United States to help Libyans overcome their differences and to move towards a comprehensive and consensual political solution between the various parties.

Tunisia, together with Egypt and Algeria proposed a joint initiative on Libya during the meeting between Alaghinawa, his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shoukri, and the Algerian Minister in charge of Maghreb Affairs, the African Union and the League of Arab States, Abdelkader Messahel, in February.
