Moroccan authorities dismantle Daesh cell

April 13, 2017 at 12:29 pm

Moroccan authorities have reportedly dismantled a “terrorist cell” used to recruit volunteers for Daesh, officials confirmed yesterday.

Seven members from the cell were arrested by authorities for recruiting and sending Moroccan volunteers to fight in Syria and Iraq, the interior ministry said in a statement.

The group were active in the northern city of Fez and nearby town of Moulay Yacoub. During the raid the police seized weapons, military uniforms, money and electronic equipment.

According to reports, the brother of one the members was arrested in a similar raid earlier and has since been convicted for planning attacks in Europe.

Morocco regularly undergoes operations dismantling Daesh cells and arresting suspected militant recruiters but has not suffered a deadly militant attack since the 2011 bombing in Marrakesh that killed 17 people.
