US troops deployed deep into Syria

US troops have been dropped by helicopter deep inside Syria, Al-Sabeel newspaper reported on Monday. The source for the story is a German news agency which quoted local sources in the Syrian city of Deir Al-Zor on the banks of the River Euphrates. The drop took place on Sunday.

The troops were apparently dropped close to arms depots used by Daesh to the south of Al-Mayadeen, south-east of Deir Al-Zor. Others were dropped across other parts of the district.

Daesh, it is said, responded by sending reinforcements to the area. The extremist group deployed dozens of mobile checkpoints where the troops were reported to have landed.
