Sudan’s President Omar Al- Bashir said yesterday that his country would intervene “to stop war and famine in the State of South Sudan”.

Bashir made his remarks during the closing session of the fourth General Conference of the ruling National Congress Party in Khartoum on Sunday.

“Some parties have called on me to reunite South Sudan with Sudan, after being hit with war, famine, conflicts and indiscriminate killing. We are dealing ethically with the people of South Sudan, because we were one people, we received them when they came in thousands fleeing war and were keen on the security and stability of their country”, Al- Bashir said.

The president called for the extension of a helping hand to Sudan and South Sudan.

The Government of South Sudan in cooperation with the World Food Program, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have recently published a report revealing that 40 per cent of the population in South Sudan are at risk of starvation and need urgent food assistance.
