Ex-Sudan president: Gulf rift not in ‘Arab interest’

June 6, 2017 at 10:30 am

The decision made by Arab states to sever ties with Qatar does not serve the “Arab interest”, the former President of Sudan, Abdel Rahman Suwar Al-Dahab, said yesterday.

The Arab situation pleases nobody but enemies and the decision of some Gulf countries to cut their relations with Qatar is very disturbing

Al-Dahab said in a statement to Quds Press. He called on the Gulf States to reconsider their decisions to help unite the Arab countries so as to meet the challenges the region is facing.

He expressed his readiness to participate in any initiative to bridge the gap between the Gulf States.

Al-Dahab added:

Arab diplomats, as well as diplomats from the Islamic world, especially in Pakistan, should move as soon as possible to stop the bleeding caused by the growing dispute between the Gulf countries in order to serve the interests of the nation.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain and Egypt announced yesterday that diplomatic ties with Qatar had been cut. Qatar’s foreign ministry expressed its regret that the states “did not find, at this critical stage, a more important and crucial challenge than targeting the State of Qatar.”

Yemen, Libya’s eastern-based government headed by Khalifa Haftar, the Maldives and Mauritius joined later and transport links were shut down.
