Tunisia, France to establish joint higher council

France and Tunisia have decided to establish a Higher Council which will hold its first meeting in Tunisia before the end of the year.

The French Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean Yves Le Drian, announced the establishment of the body which will be under the chairmanship of Tunisian President Béji Cayed Essebsi and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron.

This came in a statement issued by the Presidency of the Republic of Tunisia following a meeting between Le Drian and President Essebsi at the presidential palace in Carthage.

According to the statement, the French foreign minister has reiterated his country’s readiness to develop cooperation with Tunisia in all fields, especially in the field of combating terrorism.

The French minister also stressed Tunisia’s efforts to carry out the reforms required to promote the economy and described it as courageous.

France is Tunisia’s strongest economic partner.

According to figures published by the French embassy in 2015, 28.7 per cent of France’s imports come from Tunisia.

Meanwhile, the Tunisian president called for greater cooperation with France and welcomed all efforts that would contribute to the development and strengthening of bilateral relations in various fields.
