The crime rate in Israel has increased by 27 per cent since the start of the year until the month of May compared to the same period of 2016, Israel’s Haaretz newspaper reported.

According to official data, 55 murders were recorded in May compared to 43 in 2016.

Several retired police officers noted that the plan put in place by Commissioner of Israel Police, Roni Alsheikh, which gives priority to community police stations would lead to continued rise in levels of violence and crime in the country.

The newspaper pointed out that police refuse to disclose the crime rates in the country for the year 2016, and only draw attention to the plan to monitor budgets and resources to launch community police stations. This, it explained, makes it difficult to determine the reasons behind the increase in crime rates.
