The General Directorate of Explosives Engineering in the Palestinian police in Gaza yesterday began combing the border for Israeli shells and other weapons under the supervision of the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Palestinian sources told Quds Press that the police began combing the eastern Khan Yunis area, south of the Gaza Strip.

Israeli forces regularly shoot Palestinians who enter the area.

Mohammed Al-Astal, head of the explosives engineering department in Khan Yunis, said the aim of the initiative is to protect citizens and farmers who cultivate their land on the border.

The restricted border areas make up 37 per cent of Gaza’s agricultural land where Palestinian farmers are subjected to daily firing by Israeli forces.
