Hours after Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar concluded two days of talks in Cairo with Egyptian Armed Forces chief of staff Mahmoud Hegazi, US ambassador to Libya Peter Bodde flew in to see the Egyptian commander.

Bodde travelled to the Egyptian capital alongside US AFRICOM commander General Thomas D. Waldhauser.

A statement released by Cairo described how Bodde praised Egyptian efforts to break the current political stalemate in Libya and stressed to Hegazi, who is Egypt’s leading figure on Libya, the importance of ensuring that all political actors were involved in the political process.

Bodde went on to add that only a negotiated solution could bring peace, security and stability to war-torn Libya.

A statement released by the US embassy in Libya confirmed that the meeting had taken place and that efforts to restore stability in Libya were the main points of discussion.

The embassy’s statement disclosed how Bodde had met with head of the UN-backed government in Libya Fayez Al-Sarraj last Monday in Tunis and noted that “ultimately, Libyans must lead the process of achieving political reconciliation in their country”.
