President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi reiterated support for Somalia yesterday, Horn Observer reported, during a visit by Somalia’s President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo to Cairo aimed at strengthening ties between the two countries.
Al-Sisi stated that Egypt will continue to support institutions in Somalia and train the Somali National Army. Egypt is interesting in increasing bilateral cooperation with Somalia’s fishing and animal farming industry.
Commercial airline Egypt Air will begin direct flights from the capital Mogadishu to Cairo. This would be the second national flight to directly fly to Mogadishu in a bid to build on commercial and diplomatic ties.
There is no indication that relations with Ethiopia were discussed during the meeting between Al-Sisi and Farmajo. Egypt is currently in a dispute with Ethiopia over water resources from the Nile River.
