An official source in Sharara, Libya’s largest oilfield, said that production resumed on Wednesday after armed men closed valves in the pipeline connecting it with Al-Feil oilfield a week ago. The anonymous source said that production resumed gradually, following an agreement with the militants, without giving further details.

The oilfield, which had a production rate of 340,000 barrels per day, is located in the desert of Mirezek, 800 km south of Tripoli, and is owned and operated by Spain’s Repsol Company. Al-Feil oilfield is 750 km south of the Libyan capital.

Since the overthrow of the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has experienced political and security instability. The conflict over control of the country continues to have negative effects on the oil infrastructure. The total oil production level before Gaddafi’s ouster was 1.6 million barrels per day.
