Ibrahim Al-Senoussi: Sisi regime culpable in the death of Akef

September 25, 2017 at 12:48 am

Ibrahim Al-Senoussi, a counsellor to Sudanese president and former Secretary-General of the Sudanese Popular Congress Party, criticised the government of Egypt over the death of Mohammed Mahdi Akef, a former leader of the Muslim Brotherhood.

According to Al-Senoussi, the fact that Akef’s remained in prison, despite his old ages and illness, demonstrates that the Egyptian authorities are in fact culpable in his demise.

In a special interview with Quds Press, Senoussi described Akef – who is former General Leader (also known as Supreme Guide or Murshid) of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood – as a “martyr”.

“The death of the former General Guide of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood in the hospital under the Egyptian security forces’ supervision and his burial in a funeral that was not attended by people and the media is an evidence of the great extent of injustice and tyranny that characterize the Egyptian regime.”

He added: “The absence of people from Akef’s funeral prayer and burial rituals also reflects the sense of fragility that stains this corrupt and oppressive regime, which is afraid of Akef living or dead.”

Senoussi also stressed that “The martyrdom of Akef is a continuation of the killing process by the coup authorities in Egypt since they came to power in July 2013.”

He said: “This is not the first ordeal the Muslim Brotherhood has faced. Ouda and his companions were assassinated, as well as al-Banna and other Muslim Brotherhood leaders.

He also added: “Sisi, his regime, and the state of injustice will all disappear, while Muslim Brothers will remain. Thousands of them worldwide took part in the symbolic rituals of the absentee funeral prayer on the former leader’s soul who was martyred in prison to prove that the Muslim Brothers stick to their principles until the last minute of their lives,” as he put it.

The former Supreme Guide of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, Mohammed Mahdi Akef, died on Friday evening, inside his prison at Qasr El Eyni Hospital in western Cairo, several months after being sent to the hospital.

Mohammed Mehdi Akef, who reached the age of 89 in July 2017, was the oldest political prisoner in Egypt. He spent more than half of his life in prison.
