Former Algerian Prime Minister Ahmed Benbitour has called for president Bouteflika to step down, in a statement. Benbitour called for patriotism and unity and talked about the struggles of the Algerian people on the eve of the celebration of the sixty-third memorial of the outbreak of the Algerian revolution. He also noted the high cost paid by the Algerian people under French colonialism.

Benbitour also talked about the financial and economic potential of Algeria in though noted current challenges.

He also called for a Forum for the Preservation of the Algerian Nation and sided with other major political figures who oppose a fifth presidential term for Bouteflika’s (that would begin in April 2019). Much opposition around Bouteflika focus on his ailing health.

“It is no longer clear that the head of state is able today to continue to run the country because of a serious disability. He was hospitalized abroad and leading to his complete absence from the national and international scene. His deteriorating health suggests he is unable to exercise power”, the statement said.
