We must maintain the legal status of Jerusalem in accordance with international accords, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi said yesterday.
Speaking during a meeting held in Cairo with the Russian President Vladimir Putin, Al-Sisi stressed the importance of "maintaining the legal status of Jerusalem within the framework of international rules and relevant UN resolutions".
"I assured President Putin of the importance of maintaining the legal status of Jerusalem," he said.
"We discussed the dangerous repercussions of such a decision [US' recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital] on the security and stability of the region," the Egyptian leader noted, stressing that the US decision on Jerusalem "complicates the situation in the region through measures that restrict the chances of peace in the region."
Putin met Al-Sisi in Cairo yesterday in an official visit to launch Egypt's first-ever nuclear power plant in the country's northern area of Dabaa.
During the meeting, Putin praised Egypt's role in sponsoring the reconciliation agreement between Fatah and Hamas.
