Moroccan MPs condemned US President Donald Trump’s move to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and called for criminalising normalising ties with Israel, Quds Press reported.

During a parliamentary meeting attended by the Palestinian ambassador, the MPs called for activating a proposal which has been frozen for four years.

The MPs raised placards during the meeting that expressed their rejection and condemnation of Trump’s recognition. They also wore the Palestinian keffiyeh.

Parliamentary Speaker Habib El Malki said: “It is not merely a sovereign US decision; it is a decision that undermines the Islamic holy sites. The strangest thing is that the recognition coincides with the centenary of the Balfour Declaration.”

He added: “Trump’s decision proves disrespect for the UN and its laws,” stressing this decision is “illegitimate, unreasonable and illogical.”

El Malki also said that this decision turns the US from a “mediator” in the negotiations between the Israelis and the Palestinians to an “opponent” to the Palestinians.

Head of Moroccan Council of Consultants, Hakim Ben Chammas, said that this decision “is as equal as the Balfour Declaration,” noting that “it undermines international safety and stability”.
