The first phase of a project linking Egypt’s power network with that of Saudi Arabia will begin operating in 2021, Egypt’s energy minister said on Monday.

Mohammed Shaker explained that the project will start with capacity of 3,000 megawatts per hours.

“We hope that the project steps will move forward according to the planned schedule in order for it to be completed on time,” he said.

The minister pointed out that Egypt has signed a memorandum of understanding to link electricity networks with Cyprus and Greece, allowing it to be an electricity central hub.

Riyadh and Cairo inked the deal in 2013.

According to data from the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Energy, the project will cost $1.6 billion with Cairo forking out $600 million.
