Islamic organisations in Jerusalem said on Tuesday that the Israeli Knesset’s approval of the so-called United Jerusalem Bill is “null and void” and called upon Muslims to work towards the liberation of the holy city. The statement was backed by the Council of Jerusalem Religious Endowments, the High Islamic Commission, the Palestinian Fatwa Department and the General Directorate of Jerusalem Endowments and Al-Aqsa Affairs.

“The bill, which allows the Israeli authorities to demarcate the borders of occupied Jerusalem as if it is part of Israel, is legally and religiously null and void,” insisted the religious bodies. They called upon politicians and clerics in the Arab and Islamic world to take measures equal to the Israeli violations of Jerusalem, not only deliver speeches and issue statements.

The organisations pointed out that UN Security Council Resolution 478/1980, which is binding upon all UN members, including the US and Israel, stipulates that all Israeli measures to change the identity and legal status of Jerusalem are “null and void”. They called upon members of the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, to cancel the bill.

In conclusion, the Islamic organisations warned Muslims around the world about Israel’s plans to fill Al-Aqsa Mosque — Islam’s third holiest site — with illegal, extremist Jewish settlers.
