The Tunisian National Guard Special Units (USGN) have uncovered terrorist schemes to assassinate lawmakers and politicians from different parties.

The national guards are reported to have invited the deputies and politicians in Tunis to brief them on the threats to their lives and the decision to tighten security measures.

The units invited leader of the Popular Front Hamma Al-Hamami and MP Ayman Al-Alawi to inform them that a detained terrorist recently confessed that his cell decided to monitor the movements of some front members with the aim to assassinate them.

An MP of Ennahda Islamist Party, Walid Al-Banani told reporters on Tuesday that the anti-terrorism division has informed him of a terrorist plan to assassinate him.

Security authorities have also informed leader of the Democratic Current Party, MP Samia Abbou, of serious threats to her life.

Various Tunisian political parties and MPs announced support for their fellow members during a plenary session yesterday.

However Hamami warned that “freedom and democracy in Tunisia are threatened with campaigns of demonisation, criminalisation and incitement, which have not only affected the front’s leaders but included deputies from the governorate of Kasserine”.
