Egypt’s Court of Cassation yesterday upheld the five year prison term of Mohammed Saeed Morsi, nephew of ousted President Mohammed Morsi, according to a judicial source.

The source said the Court of Cassation rejected the appeal filed by Morsi and 11 others also sentenced to five years imprisonment each on charges of attempting to storm the Zagazig police station in 2013.

The source pointed out that the judgment was final and could not be challenged.

The same court overturned a one-year prison sentence against Morsi on charges of contempt of court.

In May 2015, the Zagazig Criminal Court sentenced Morsi’s nephew and 11 co- defendants to five years in prison. The defendants appealed the verdict in late June of the same year and the court announced its final verdict yesterday.

The defendants denied all charges against them including belonging to a group established contrary to the law, in reference to the Muslim Brotherhood, resisting the authorities, damaging public and private properties, violating the law of protest and possession of weapons and fireworks.
