Tunisia: Military judiciary listening to Marzouki’s testimony

Well-informed Tunisian sources have revealed that the investigating magistrate of the Permanent Military Court in Tunis had a hearing session with Former president Moncef Marzouki, a former president of the republic. Marzouki will act as a witness in a case investigating a conspiracy against state security, with which the businessman Chafik Jarraya was charged.

Shams FM, a local radio station in Tunisia, reported, Marzouki’s testimony, which took place yesterday followed statements by security official who reported that Tunisia had given Libyan armed groups training in 2012 and 2013. Though this was undertaken without the official permission of Tunis. Accring to the official and that Marzouki was informed through informal channels, but they did not act so as “not to disrupt the relations between Tunisia and Libya”.

In May, the Military Prosecution in Tunis decided to open an investigation against Jarraya on charges of attacking and participating in “external state security and treason, and putting himself at the disposal of a foreign army in peacetime” without giving further details.

In December, the military judiciary asked the Supreme Judicial Council to lift the immunity of former interior minister Najem Gharsalli (whose mandate was terminated as ambassador to Tunisia in Morocco), previously heard by the investigating magistrate as a witness in “attacking the external security of the state ” case,  of which the businessman Chafik Jarraya, who is currently arrested, was accused.
