US President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner are expected to be among the 250 US delegates to open the US embassy in Jerusalem in May, Israeli TV Channel 10 reported on Sunday. Forty members of the Senate and House of Representatives are expected to be among the delegates.
US Special Middle East Peace Envoy Jason Greenblatt will take part in the inauguration of the embassy on 14 May along with a number of pro-Israel organisations. In December 2017 Trump recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and announced his administration would relocate the US embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city.
This recognition ignited a wave of tension among the Palestinians in the occupied Palestinian territories and abroad.
Guatemala followed in Trump’s footsteps and announced it would move its embassy to Jerusalem too.
Last week Quds Press reported that the Israeli government announced it had reached advanced stages in the talks with six other countries to move their embassies to Jerusalem.
