Egypt buys 35% of domestic wheat

The Egyptian government announced on Monday that it had purchased 35 per cent of its targeted amount of locally-produced wheat to reach 1.4 million tonnes down from a total of 4 million tonnes this season.

Egypt’s Supply and Internal Trade Minister Ali Al-Meselhi said in a statement that the cost of the imported quantity amounted to EGP 5.5 billion ($ 313 million).

The wheat harvest season in Egypt starts in mid-April and ends in mid-July.

Meselhi noted that the ministry refused to receive about 6,774 tons of old wheat, which contained insects or impurities.

Egypt’s Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade announced earlier that the government has approved to buy wheat from local farmers at prices up to $ 34.1 per ardeb (150 kg) on average.
