Palestinians will seek international protection at General Assembly

Palestinian Foreign Affairs Minister Riyad Al-Maliki said that Palestinians would call on the United Nations General Assembly to assemble under the heading “United for a Lasting Peace” to seek international protection for the Palestinian people because of a possible veto in the UN Security Council.

In a statement, Al-Maliki asserted that, “The US Mission in the UN expressed its objection to a bill for the international protection of the Palestinian people, which had been discussed in the UN Security Council, and expressed its willingness to use the veto against it.”

Palestinians have long been seeking a resolution that would provide international protection for the Palestinian people against the Israeli violations.

Two days ago, Palestinians had formally submitted a request to the International Criminal Court to request an investigation into Israeli war crimes committed by Israeli officials.

The Palestinian minister claimed that the Palestinian leadership, “is still continuing the international diplomatic movement to confront the Israeli occupation and the US bias towards it, especially after Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in December last year.

On the 14th of this month, the Palestinian president has also approved Palestine’s joining of 22 new international organisations in response to the transfer of the United States embassy to Jerusalem.

“The State of Palestine has joined three international organisations, which are part of a group of 22 organisations that the State of Palestine has promised the US administration not to join in return for a series of steps and measures that the administration should not have taken, including the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, the transfer of the US embassy, the cutting off of financial aids or the change in attitude regarding the settlement.” said Al-Maliki

He added:

“Since Trump’s administration has unilaterally reversed all these obligations, the Palestinian side had no other option than to gradually progress in exercising its right to join those international organisations. It has started with joining the INTERPOL, and it has now joined the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).”
