The European Union has extended the sanctions it has imposed on the Syrian regime for another year.

The Council of the European Union issued a statement in which it announced: “The restrictive measures against the Syrian regime have been extended to 1 June 2019.”

The statement pointed out that the decision came due to the regime’s continued repression of civilians.

The EU has also updated the list of persons and entities included in the sanctions. It now includes 67 bodies and 259 people who had been banned from travelling and whose assets have been frozen.

The statement also pointed out that four of those listed have contributed to the development of the use of chemical weapons against civilians in Syria.

The sanctions include an oil embargo, restrictions on certain types of investments, the freezing of the assets of the Central Bank of Syria in the European Union, and restrictions on the import of equipment or techniques that could help the regime increase its repression of civilians.
