Russian President Vladimir Putin said the military operation in Syria is a unique opportunity to test and train Russian troops.

Speaking on television, Putin said that attacking extremists in Syria was better than dealing with them in Russia, stressing that he was not currently planning to withdraw Russian forces from Syria.

The Russian president went on to describe claims that the Kremlin may have intervened in the 2016 US presidential election in favour of Donald Trump as a “joke”.

Putin said the allegations were “totally nonsense and could only be described as a joke”.
