Tunisian Minister of National Defence, Abdelkarim Zebidi, confirmed that there have been no coup attempts in his country since 2011.

Local radio station Shems FM reported yesterday, Zebidi saying: “This is just a scandal used regularly either to fish in troubled waters or to apply the proverb: ‘a bad workman blames his tools’.

Zebidi pointed out that “all the leaders in the security and the military establishments received training in the military academy. Therefore, the military and the Republican doctrines are firmly consolidated in these leaders’ minds.”

He called for the need to support the security and military establishments, believing that such news could threaten the country’s stability, especially at a time when Tunisia is entering its peak tourism season.

“We do not need such claims… These are mere myths.”

Regarding the parties that spread the news of the coup attempt in Tunisia, Zebidi explained that the situation is to be handled by the highest authority in the state.

“There is no need to worry or question the security and military establishments.”

French website Le Monde Afrique had revealed earlier this month ousted Interior Minister Lotfi Brahem’s planned coup d’état in coordination with the UAE.

Brahem was removed from his post at the start of June by Prime Minister Youssef Chahed.
