The Iraqi army has dispatched reinforcements to the US embassy in Baghdad’s Green Zone as protests sweep several provinces in the country, local media reported yesterday.

Local media reported security sources as saying that “military reinforcements and equipment began Saturday night to enter the US embassy and the Green Zone, in central Baghdad.”

The security sources did not disclose the reasons for enhancing the military presence at the embassy.

Iraq has been witnessing a wave of protests which began in the south of the country and spread to central provinces as a result of the deteriorating living conditions, corruption and increasing unemployment.
