The defence ministers of Iran and Syria have signed a military cooperation agreement which includes rebuilding the Syrian defence infrastructure and the regime’s armed forces.

The agreement was signed in Damascus on Sunday. Syrian regime President Bashar Al-Assad was present along with a number of military officials from both countries, Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported.

Iranian Defence Minister, Amir Hatami said the agreement aims to strengthen defence infrastructure in Syria and allows Iran’s “presence and participation” in Syria.

“Iran will participate in the reconstruction of the armed forces and defence industries in Syria to allow it to return to full capacity,” he added.

The agreement, according to the agency, provides for allowing the Iranian military advisers to stay in Syria, and the removal of minefields from the country .
