Saudi Arabia has launched a comprehensive plan to replace foreign works in 12 occupations with Saudi nationals within five months, local media outlets reported.

The new decision will come into effect in September under the so-called “Saudisation scheme”. Its implementation will be carried out in three stages. The first stage targets salespersons for automobiles and motorbikes, men’s clothes and accessories, and home furniture.

The second, which begins in October, will include staff who work in the sale of eyeglasses and appliances.

Next January will see the launching of the third stage which will cover salespersons in shops and companies that offer medical equipment, construction material, car spare parts and carpets.

The Ministry of Labour and Social Development said that the decision aims to empower Saudi citizens, both males and females, within the country’s professional and economic realms. It also aims to reinforce their participation in the private sector.
