US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo yesterday said that Washington expects all countries to stop importing Iranian crude oil or face sanctions.

Pompeo, who is currently visiting India, added that the US would consider waivers for Iranian oil buyers like India where appropriate, noting that several countries may take “a little time to finalise” purchases of Iranian oil.

Pompeo revealed that India will buy more energy products and aircrafts from the United States in the next phase, expressing his country’s determination to correct trade relations with Delhi.

“It is such a pleasure to see the possibility of replacing Iranian oil with American products,” he added.

In May the US withdrew from an accord between Iran and six world powers aimed at stalling Tehran’s nuclear capabilities in return for lifting some sanctions. It ordered the reimposition of US sanctions suspended under the deal.
