Egypt, Eritrea discuss boosting bilateral relations

September 14, 2018 at 1:39 pm

Egypt is keen on strengthening its bilateral relations with Eretria in all fields, the Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said yesterday.

Speaking during a visit to the Eritrean capital Asmara, Shoukry said: “In light of the stabilised relations between nations across the Horn of Africa region, we [the Egyptian government] continuously support Eretria in restoring its effective role on the African and international levels.”

Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki hailed the “historical relations between Egypt and Eretria” as well as “Egypt’s continuous support” for his country in the different fields. “I hope that we keep the momentum of the close relations between the two countries going,” he added.

During their meeting, the two African leaders also discussed several regional issues, especially the security and stability of Africa and the Red Sea.

The visit comes in the wake of what reporters have called “a boom in the Egyptian-Eritrean relations”. The two countries recently signed six new agreements regarding the implementation of joint developmental projects.
