Four Palestinian engineers from BirZeit University in the West Bank have won the gold medal in the  Scientific and Technological Innovation Show in China.

The four engineers developed an prosthetic hand capable of performing multiple functions while controlled by human muscles.

The invention came after the Israeli army cut the hand of Ahmed Sajdiya, an engineering student at BirZeit University in November 2014 after occupation forces stormed the Qalandia refugee camp north of Jerusalem.

Less than two years later, Ahmed and three of his colleagues at the university’s mechanical engineering department decided to develop an artificial limb to help amputees.
