Egypt removes Brotherhood leader from terror list

The Egyptian Court of Cassation yesterday removed the Supreme Guide of Muslim Brotherhood (MB) Mohammad Badei and 35 other members of the group from the terror list, Almesryoon reported.

The court held two hearings to discuss an appeal filed by the MB leader and members against a previous ruling made by the Cairo Criminal Court which added 51 Egyptians, including Badei, to the terror list for three years in 2017.

They were prosecuted over claims that they “prepared an operation room to direct the actions of the Muslim Brotherhood against the state during the time between July 2013 and January 2014.” The suspects deny the claim.

On 14 April, the court approved a life term against Badei along with two other senior leaders in the same case. It also upheld five-year sentences against 15 Brotherhood members and acquitted 21 others. Twelve suspects, who were sentenced in absentia, did not appeal the rulings.
