Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh today called on the Egyptian authorities to investigate the shooting of Palestinian fisherman by Egyptian troops.

Eyewitnesses said that on Friday two Egyptian military boats and a third Israeli one surrounded the boat of Palestinian fisherman Mustafa Abu-Odeh near the Egyptian maritime borders.

The eyewitnesses said that the Egyptians opened fire at him, leaving him seriously wounded. He was later announced dead in hospital.

“We were shocked that Mustafa was killed by the Egyptian troops,” Haniyeh said, noting that Hamas asked the Egyptian authorities to open an investigation into the incident.

He said that senior Egyptian intelligence officials said that they would follow up on the incident and reply to his request.
