Jordan arrests renowned journalist over ‘offensive Last Supper’ image

Renown Jordanian publisher and radio show host Mohammed Al-Wakeel has been detained for one week pending investigations on charges of causing offense that could after he published an altered version of the “The Last Supper” art work.

The edited version of the Leonardo da Vinci’s mural showed celebrity Turkish chef Nusret Gokce standing in the place of Jesus and holding is famous salt-sprinkling pose. The altered image caused anger amongst the Christian community in Jordan as well as on social media.

Both Al-Wakeel and an intern were arrested as a result of the backlash.

Al-Wakeel later removed the image and issued an official apology describing the incidence as unintended “mistake”.

The original painting depicts Jesus’ final meal with his disciples ahead of his crucifixion.
