Arab League postpones meeting on Syria membership

The Arab League has postponed a meeting that was due to take place yesterday to discuss a number of issues including ways to restore normal relations with Syria, Russia’s RT reported yesterday.

The meeting has been postponed to Wednesday.

The assembly of the league’s permanent members will discuss “restoring Syria’s membership to the bloc”, which has been frozen since November 2011.

The Egyptian state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper quoted local sources as saying that the council would allow the resuming of the Arab embassies’ operations in the Syrian capital of Damascus as well as reopening the Syrian embassies in the different Arab capitals.

The sources pointed out that some of the bloc’s member states support the return of Syria’s membership. They added that the decision would allow the attendance of the Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad during the Arab Economic Summit due later this month in Lebanon.

Last month Algeria called for Al-Assad to be invited to attend the Arab League summit scheduled to take place in March. While the UAE announced last week the reopening of its embassy in Damascus, followed by Bahrain which said the Syrian Embassy in Manama is operating as usual.

Syria was suspended from the Arab League over its failure to end the bloodshed caused by brutal government crackdowns on pro-democracy protests.
