Senior Muslims Brotherhood leader Mohamed Beltagy has been suffering from a critical health condition in the Egypt’s notorious Aqrab prison, his family said yesterday.

A statement published by his wife Sanaa on Facebook said that she had been informed that her husband had blood clot in his brain but she was not told when this occurred.

“As there are no visitation rights for prisoners at Al-Aqrab Prison, as Dr Mohammad Beltagy has been in prison for three years in a flagrant violation of all constitutions and international treaties. His health condition continues to deteriorate and he has suffered a blood clot in the brain without the knowledge of his family. We do not know what treatment he has been offered.”

“We were surprised during the last court hearing as the effects of a stroke appeared on his body. This was very clear in his hand as the lawyers and families who attended the hearing said he couldn’t move his arm,” the entry said.

“This is a proof that the biased judiciary continues to oppress him and violate his rights … it has refused to take immediate measures to treat him as a human.”

The family called for rights groups and international bodies to intervene and pressure the Egyptian authorities to care for Beltagy and hundreds of other prisoners who are suffering as a result of the violations they ensure in Egyptian detention.
