Algeria: Ruling party's website hacked

March 7, 2019 at 12:31 am

On Wednesday morning, the website of the ruling National Liberation Front (FLN) party in Algeria has been subjected to an anonymous hacking operation, coinciding with rising popular protests in opposition to the fifth term of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who also heads the party.

According to Anadolu Agency, hackers calling themselves DZ Anonymous Hackers, apparently referring to their Algerian nationality, wrote in a black background on the home page of the website a sentence in English: “Leave us alone! Leave Algeria alone! “We give forgiveness,”

Shortly after, the website has completely stopped working, while sources from the ruling party said that the party leadership has stopped the website, until the removal of what the hackers have published.

The hacking incident has coincided with rising popular protests in opposition to the candidacy of Bouteflika, 82, for a fifth term in the presidential elections to be held on 18 April. Several labour organisations and unions have quickly joined the protests.
