Qatar’s Ambassador Mohammed Al-Emadi met the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday during a visit to the besieged enclave, Safa news agency has reported. The Ambassador, who is also in charge of Qatar’s Gaza Construction Committee, met Yahya Al-Sinwar for discussions on the Palestinian issue.

The two men discussed a number of development projects proposed by the Committee to alleviate the effects of the Israeli-led siege imposed on Gaza. During the meeting, Al-Sinwar stressed the “warmth” of the relationship between Hamas and Qatar, and thanked the Gulf State for its “generous” support for the Palestinians in the territory.

Al-Emadi pointed out that Qatar will continue to support the Palestinians in Gaza, where he arrived on Sunday. The Construction Committee, he announced, is to build a permanent headquarters in the west of Gaza City.

The Qatari official thanked President Mahmoud Abbas, the head of the Palestinian Authority, Fatah and PLO, for granting his committee a plot of land for the building. Critics of Abbas noted that this was the same land about which the PA leader criticised Hamas’s gift of it to the Qataris because it was where the late Yasser Arafat’s helicopter used to land.
