Iran’s Revolutionary Guards yesterday vowed to strengthen its defensive and offensive systems and capabilities to retaliate against its enemies and teach them “unforgettable lessons”.

The Guards made the announcement in response to US President Donald Trump’s decision to designate the Corps a “terrorist organisation … a way to expand the scope and scale of our maximum pressure on the Iranian regime.”

“The American administration’s illegal conduct is a testament of the depth of the American hatred and anger toward this revolutionary and popular institution,” Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported the Guards as saying in their statement.

“Trump’s foolish decision which is a continuation of the White House’s series of defeats in the region has increased the Guards’ determination to accelerate the strengthening of our defensive and offensive systems capabilities.”

Earlier this week, Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said the United States had made “a vicious move” in designating the Revolutionary Guards as a foreign terrorist organisation.
