The Sudanese army announced yesterday that ousted president Omar Al-Bashir will not be extradited to other countries while they are still in power, but he will be tried in local courts.

Colonel General, Omar Zein Abedeen, told reporters at a press conference in the capital, Khartoum that handing Al-Bashir over would be “an ugly mark on Sudan … even rebels carrying weapons, we won’t extradite them”.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued two international arrests warrants against al- Bashir in 2008 and 2009 on charges of organising war crimes and crimes against humanity in Sudan’s Darfur region between 2003 and 2008.

Earlier on Thursday, Sudan’s Defence Minister Ahmad Awad Bin Awf announced the overthrow and detention of President Omar Al-Bashir after months of anti-government protests.
