Moroccan activists yesterday launched a campaign to boycott onions and other food items after merchants increased their prices due to high demand during the month of Ramadan.

The activists took to social media to launch their campaign saying the price of one kilogramme of onions has jumped from less than six dirhams ($0.6) to 15 dirhams ($1.5) on the first day of the holy month.

Minister of General Affairs and Governance Lahcen Daoudi told parliament on Monday that the prevailing culture among traders is to exploit Ramadan to increase prices.

The minister held the Moroccan citizens responsible for the high prices, saying sometimes they purchase more than their needs during the first week of Ramadan which contributes to the high price.
