The deputy spokesman at the German Foreign Ministry, Rainer Breul, condemned on Monday the Syrian regime’s attacks on Idlib.
Speaking to reporters in Berlin, Breul called on the warring parties to commit to the ceasefire in the area.
The German official has welcomed the Turkish-Russian talks to reduce tension in Idlib. “Priority must be given to preventing humanitarian disasters,” he added. “The Assad regime and Russia bear a special responsibility in this regard.”
Syrian regime forces supported by their Russian allies and foreign militias have recently escalated their attacks across the Idlib region, and have seized key towns within the de-escalation zone.
Hundreds of thousands of civilians have been displaced towards the Syria-Turkey border.
More than 1.6 million Syrians have been displaced from the areas in and around Idlib and Aleppo since the beginning of last year.
