The ceremony is a thank you to the journalists for their achievements, which usually include confronting the Israeli occupation forces’ siege, and the resulting stories and pictures that had an impact on the Arab and international public opinion.

MEMO’s photographer, Mohammed Asad, noted that he was honoured for receiving three international awards in 2018. The awards are: Pictures of the Year International (POYI) Award of Excellence for 2018, gold medal at the AFAN International Exhibition of Photography, and third place in the Street Photography category of the 2018 35Awards.

Asad says that the competition amongst photographers in Gaza is a result of their refined experience in wars and violations by the occupation. This has given them the ability and courage to continuously participate in contests with major international photographers.

According to Asad, receiving an international award for these pictures retells the story behind the picture, and ensures the story of Palestinians is retold.
