Rached Ghannouchi, parliament speaker and head of the Ennahda Movement, condemned the terrorist attack that took place near the US embassy on Friday morning, stressing that: “Conspiracies will not stop us from continuing on our democratic path.”

Ghannouchi announced on Friday via Facebook: “We condemn the terrorist attack that targeted the US embassy this morning, and we thank Allah for his kind and merciful protection.”

He added: “Tunisia, with its unity and the security of the republic, is immune to terrorism, and conspiracies will not stop us from continuing our democratic path.”

The parliament speaker continued: “Long live Tunisia, safe and reassured, and shame on all conspirators.”

The suicide attack took place on Friday morning near the US embassy in the capital of Tunis, according to Tunis Afrique Presse. Local media reported that two terrorists were behind the bombing.

Media reports revealed that the bombing led to the death of a first lieutenant in the police force, and seriously injured six others.

The Tunisian Ministry of the Interior confirmed that security forces are in a state of alert. In the wake of the bombing, the capital of Tunis is witnessing a heavy security presence, while no party has announced responsibility for the attack.

Security sources confirmed to Arabi21 that two terrorists detonated themselves on a motorbike near the US embassy in Tunis.

Interior Ministry spokesman, Khaled Hayouni, confirmed that the security units are collecting data that will be presented to the media.

American schools have closed their doors, while the US embassy issued a short statement, calling for avoiding the embassy following the bombing.

Tunisian writer and political analyst, Kamal Ben Younes, disclosed in an interview with Arabi21 that: “The terrorist attack that targeted the US embassy in Tunis held three messages. The first is that it comes on the third anniversary of the Bin Qirdan operation, where the Tunisian president visited yesterday.”

According to Ben Younes, the second message, which he describes as the most dangerous, is that the parties behind these terrorist attacks want to convey the message that they are able to transfer terrorism from mountains to cities, and even to the capital.

He added: “The third message is that this attack carries a regional dimension that has to do with what is going on in Libya, Algeria, the Sahel and Saharan countries, and its essence is that there are parties that seek to target and frustrate the democratic transition.”
