Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has said that Cairo is eager to start talks and build ties with Turkey in a way that serves the interests of both countries, Egyptian media reported on Sunday.

Speaking to a private TV station to comment on the phone call he held with his Turkish counterpart, Shoukry said: “The latest Turkish gestures are appreciated. Both sides are interested to move from political gestures to taking practical measures.”

“Egypt is eager to start talks and create relations based on international law that serves the interests of both countries.”

Last month, Turkey announced that it had resumed diplomatic contacts with Egypt and wanted to improve cooperation after years of tensions that began with the 2013 military coup in Cairo that ousted the country’s first democratically elected president.
