Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said yesterday that “an agreement has been reached to lift the main sanctions on our country, but there are still other penalties that must be lifted to fully implement the nuclear deal.”

“The sanctions could have been lifted, but it should have been done unanimously, and we are the ones who requested the full lifting of the sanctions, and in the form of steps,” added Rouhani.

On Wednesday, Iranian officials confirmed that agreements had been reached on fundamental issues during the Vienna negotiations on the nuclear deal, calling on the United States to take the first step to lift the sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister and chief negotiator, Abbas Araghchi, told Press TV: “All the members of the joint committee are determined to end the negotiations, and what I saw today in the first meeting of the joint committee [the fifth round of negotiations] was a real intention on all participators’ part to reach a result.”

“We were able to make important progress, but some major issues remain unresolved, and despite the progress we achieved, some prominent files are still to be discussed,” he continued.

Since early April, the Austrian capital has hosted the meetings of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) regarding the Iranian nuclear programme, in order to ensure the US’ return to the deal signed in 2015, lift the sanctions imposed on Iran after Washington’s withdrawal from the accord, and guarantee the involved parties’ commitment to the file.
