The Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese army, Lieutenant-General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, met with a delegation from the Arab League in the capital Khartoum on Sunday amid rising tension between the army and civil society forces calling for return to civilian transitional rule, Sudan state TV has reported.

The delegation later met with recently-ousted Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok for “lengthy talks” on challenges facing the transitional process and efforts to support dialogue. A statement from the umbrella body stressed the importance of dialogue as a means of dealing with crises that arise during the democratic transition process in Sudan.

The delegation was led by Hossam Zaki, an Assistant to the Secretary-General of the Arab League. He said that the delegation conveyed a “verbal message” from Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit confirming the organisation’s support for democratic transformation.

Al-Burhan apparently reiterated the army’s “full commitment” to this objective. He added that it is keen to protect the gains of the Sudanese revolution and fulfil the aspirations of its people.

Sudan has been suffering from a political crisis since Al-Burhan declared a state of emergency on 25 October and dissolved the sovereign council and government. The Forces of Freedom and Change alliance, the civil society component in the ruling coalition, accused the general of carrying out a military coup.
